5 out of 5 stars Superb story - it made me cry!   March 7, 2010
L. Brothwell (UK)
Having already purchased Meerkats - The Movie (which is a superb DVD) and not seen any of the Meerkat Manor series, I was curious if The Movie could be equalled and it was! This DVD has a great storyline with a sad ending but I guess that is the harsh reality of life in the wild. It follows Flower from her beginning and rise to the matriarch of the group then her untimely tragic end defending her group to the last with the ultimate sacrifice, and I'm not ashamed to say I wept like a baby at the end. The film is an unobtrusive insight into the lives of these wonderful creatures, very sympathetically made and a joy to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice dvd   January 2, 2010

Meerkat Manor - The Story Begins describes the birth of Flower the later matriarch of the Whiskers and how the first beginning of the series is made. I liked especially also the piece of Shakespeare one of the Whiskers. And it is a nice completion of the series 1, 2 and 3 especially. Great recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The story of Flower   December 13, 2009

If you want more Meerkat Manor - this is it. The story of Flower's early life. Full of drama and emotional punches. It's just a shame it couldn't have been narrated by Bill Nighy for UK viewers - a continuation of his laconic tones that we have come to love.

3 out of 5 stars Compare the Meerkats   November 1, 2009

This film version of the Meerkat Manor tv series exhausted my enthusiasm for the cute little critters. It's probably best enjoyed by anyone who is determined to see everything to do with Meerkat Manor or alternatively anyone who hasn't seen the tv series yet. It tries to incorporate the techniques used in Meerkats: The Movie with its classy narration from Whoopi Goldberg along with a neat and flowing story, but in some ways it falls between two stools and isn't as enjoyable as either.

Again we're following the adventures of Flower and her group, but unlike the tv series where they appear to film real meerkats doing real meerkat things, this film has 'actor' meerkats playing the roles and there's more of an attempt to make their activities into a story. But unlike Meerkats: The Movie the story is slight and simple to let the very young understand, and doesn't have a moral or a sense of direction. In some ways of course this doesn't matter as the photography is breath-taking, but there's a lot of obvious scene staging that perhaps takes the film too far away from the nature documentary.

That may sound over-critical for something that has been made with such care and which is meant to be just enjoyed, but as far as I was concerned this was a meerkat too far. I'd prefer to watch all four tv series of the Meerkat Manor saga featuring the real animals and their triumphs and disasters rather than this somewhat contrived tale.
